These pumps were used to regulate the chemical composition of the coolant. The coolant was composed of distilled water, boric acid (to moderate the reaction), ammonia (to recombine oxygen created through radiolysis of cooling water), hydrazine (to bind oxygen) and potassimum hydroxide (to offset the acidity of the boric acid).
